Day 8

The rural paradise and rice fields of Mai Chau

This morning we leave Hanoi and drive to the rural paradise of Mai Chau. With tranquil rice fields, wooden houses on stilts and locals in conical hats going about their daily lives, this rural idyll seems a world away from the hustle and bustle of nearby Hanoi.

After lunch we'll adjust to life in the slow lane and spend the rest of the day shooting in and around the local villages and surrounding landscape. Here locals will greet you with big smiles and a genuine interest in learning about your way of life. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself invited into someone’s home for a glass or two of the locally produced rice wine!

A true insight into Vietnam life over dinner

This evening we will be staying in the village of Ban Lac in a local home stay. This picturesque accommodation is home to a family who has lived in the village for generations and tonight we will be able to learn all about the history and way of life of this magical pocket of Vietnam.

After a family dinner, we will have the chance to experience the traditional dancing of the White Thai minority community whom are hosting us. After this we might well be presented with a large clay pot full of rice wine!

Please be aware that this home stay is different to a 'hotel', as it is a family home. Furnishings are clean and comfortable, but basic. Accommodation is shared in dorm-like bamboo huts. For those who want to, there is the option of staying in a nearby hotel for an additional supplement.

Day 9

Exploring Mai Chau by bike!

By far the best way to see the area around Mai Chau is by bike, so following breakfast we put on our peddle pushers and spend the morning doing just that! The cycling terrain is very flat, quiet and safe, however, for those who don't want to risk saddle sore, there are several leisurely walks through the paddy fields to choose from.

Transfer back to Hanoi for dinner

After lunch a home made lunch back at our home-stay, we bid farewell to our generous hosts and drive back to Hanoi for dinner and a chance to look at some of the images of our time in Mai Chau.

This morning we drive to Vietnam’s most recognized natural wonders, Ha Long Bay. Here giant limestone islands rise up from the crystal blue waters and traditional sailing boats navigate the many coves, caves and islands fishing for squid and other seafood delicacies.

Check into our boat for lunch and an overnight cruise

After settling into our private boats, where everyone enjoys the luxury and privacy of their own spacious ensuite room, lunch is served on deck as some of Ha Long bay’s magnificent natural wonders glide past.

After a day on the water photographing, swimming or simply marveling at the magnificence of the bay we enjoy cocktails on deck and look at some of the day’s images as the sun sets. Following dinner aboard the boats there is the chance to try our hand at catching some squid by the light of the moon!

Day 11

Sunrise photography and the chance for an early morning swim

For those who want to, there is the chance to get up at sunrise to capture the bay when it looks the most beautiful. After breakfast there will be time to take a dip in the crystal clear waters or for those who would prefer to stay dry, you can sit with your tutor and go through your photos so far.

Transfer back to Hanoi, final presentation of images and farewell dinner

After arriving back at port we transfer back to Hanoi. Here we have the chance to freshen up and with the help of your tutor, sort your best shots from the past few days into a final edit. Then we hit the town for a few drinks and dinner at the Wild Lotus Restaurant. After dinner we’ll have a few celebratory drinks and marvel at everyone’s wonderful photos from the holiday!

Day 12

A leisurely morning and depart for the airport

Today’s itinerary depends on flight times, however, there is usually time for a quick shopping trip in the morning before departing for Hanoi airport to head back to good old Blighty!
