Introduction

'Rugged', 'sublime', 'epic'. These words don't even come close to describing the magnificence of Mongolia, a destination where you'll feel as free as the nomads who famously roam the vast mountains, deserts and valleys.

During this 12-night explorer photography holiday we will first experience the bustling capital, Ulaanbaatar, before travelling deep into the wild heart of Mongolia. You'll experience first hand the timeless traditions of an extraordinary country which was once regarded as an inaccessible wilderness.

Climb the sand dunes in the Gobi desert and shoot the sunrise at dawn.

What makes this trip special?

We see so many amazing different landscapes on this trip, from the hot sand dunes of the Gobi to the red flaming cliffs to the rolling green hills of the highlands. There's a real feeling of adventure as we cross the vast country in our special 4x4 vehicles, sometimes not seeing a paved road for days.

For two nights we will also be staying at a traditional Mongolian homestay with a local family. This offers us a unique insight into Mongolian life as well as presenting some intimate photography opportunities.

Where you'll stay

For the first and last night we will be in Mongolia’s capital, Ulaanbaatar. These are the only nights when we will be staying in a hotel. We have chosen Hotel Ulaanbaatar which is very clean, comfortable and well located.

Most other nights when we are in the wilderness we will be staying in permanently located ‘ger camps’. A ger camp typically comprises 20-30 gers, each with actual beds and a traditional wood-burning stove - like glamping, but slightly more ‘authentic’! Separate male & female bathroom blocks with western-style facilities are located in the camp, as well as a communal dining ger where meals are served. All guests will enjoy the privacy and comfort of their own ger tent.

For two nights we will be staying at a traditional Mongolian homestay with a local family. This offers us a unique insight into Mongolian life as well as presenting some intimate photography opportunities. Please be aware that some may consider this ‘roughing it’ as you will be sharing your ger with another member of the group (same sex, of course). There are no showers here and toilets are somewhat basic, but staying with this family is sure to be one of the highlights experiences of the trip.

What You’ll Learn

Frui adopts a positive teaching approach, meaning our encouraging and supportive tutors focus on what you are doing right, not wrong.

No two tours are the same, and our small group sizes mean that we can tailor tuition to our guests so that whether you’re a beginner or an expert, you’ll always learn new things. Our focus is strongly on the creative side of photography, so as well as introducing you to important camera settings, tutors will encourage you to develop what is individual about your photographic style and approach.

On this trip the focus will be on tuition 'in the field'. Your tutor will be on hand throughout the day offering advice and tips when you need them and setting the occasional challenge. We'll also have some sit-down lessons and there will also be a couple of opportunities for one-to-one tutorials. Often in the evenings we’ll look at the best images from the day- a great way to learn from each other. Some of the things you will learn include:

Rules of composition, both basic and more advanced
All about exposure, from ISO, shutter speed and aperture and more advanced exposure techniques
How to plan and shoot on location to ensure you capture the best of your subject
Portraiture photography techniques
Landscape photography techniques
Night photography techniques
How to review and edit your own images to create a series

What to expect

One thing's for sure: on all Frui trips you can expect small groups of no more than ten people, your own en-suite room wherever possible with no single supplement, and a fun, sociable atmosphere. We also always aim to strike the best balance between comfort and off-the-beaten track locations, and divide our trips into three categories so that you can get an idea of how 'adventurous' they'll be.
