A typical itinerary for our photography holiday to Marrakech

Day 1

Welcome drinks & candle light dinner on the Riad’s roof terrace

After touching down in Marrakech you are welcomed by the tutors and your very own Man in Morocco, Ahmed El Jabri. We are then driven through the bustling streets of Marrakech to the tranquillity of our exquisitely furnished riad. Here we have a chance to freshen up and settle into our ensuite rooms before gathering on the riad’s roof terrace for an introduction to the holiday and some ice-cold sundowners. Once the sun has set over Marrakech, our candle light dinner will be served on the terrace.

Day 2

Photography class and the Yves Saint Laurent gardens & Koutoubia Mosque

Following breakfast you shall be given your first photography lesson on the roof terrace. Inspired, we then travel to the Yves Saint Laurent Gardens, an oasis of colour and light, and the perfect place to experiment with composition. On the way back, we visit the Koutoubia Mosque and Minaret, and listen as Ahmed tells us all about its fascinating history.

Leisurely afternoon & evening photography presentation

We have lunch overlooking the magnificent main square and then return to the calm of the riad for an afternoon rest and, for those who want to, one on one tutorials. At around 6.30, we gather on the roof terrace for a drink and look at the photographs taken that day. Tonight we have a traditional colonial drinking experience at Hotel Tazi and then enjoy dinner at a nearby restaurant, overlooking the hustle and bustle of the main square.

Day 3

The ancient Souk, the Ali Ben Youssef Medersa and the Berber pharmacy

Breakfast on the terrace is followed by your second photographic lesson. We then take a walk through Marrakech’s famous 12th century Souk, where you’ll find shops selling anything from fish, leather, spices to silks.

After our intrepid guide, Ahmed, leads us though the Souk, we arrive at Ali Ben Youssef Medersa, Marrakech’s 14th century Medieval Islamic College. Here, surrounded by exquisitely carved cederwood, you have a chance to experiment with what we covered during the morning’s class.

On our way back to the riad, we will stop off at a traditional Berber pharmacy, which has a remarkable array of natural remedies, as well as herbs and spices for cooking.

Lunch in riad and a leisurely afternoon

It’s then back to the riad for a lovely long lunch and a relaxing afternoon where you can either choose to sunbath on the terrace, look at your shots with a tutor or venture out into the Souk with Ahmed to take some more photographs.

Evening photography presentation and dinner

At around 6.30, we head out for some drinks at the Kosy Bar, the terrace of which boasts one of the most stunning views of the city. Here, over a few G&Ts, we’ll have a look at the day’s images. Then it’s on to dinner at a nearby restaurant.

Day 4

A morning of shooting and lunch

This morning, with the help of the tutors, you will be able to shoot a series of photographs on a theme of your choosing. It might be focused on the souk, portraits of locals or life in the main square. There’s simply so much to be inspired by in Marrakech!

Afternoon tutorials and unforgettable gala dinner

Following lunch at the riad, the afternoon will be spent looking at your images with a tutor. This evening we shall enjoy some sundowners while looking at everyone’s photographs. Then it’s off the French Quarter for cocktails and our gala dinner at Le Comptoir.

Day 5

Shopping and tutorials

Today is left open for shopping in the souk, under the watchful eye of Ahmed, of course, and a last minute trouble shooting session for those who have any specific photographic questions they would like answered.

Tagine Class, cocktails and goodbyes!

Before lunch Abdul, the riad’s head chef, will teach us how to make a Kofta tagine. Then at around 4pm (depending on flight times) we shall gather in the courtyard for cocktails and goodbyes, before taking one final drive through Marrakech and then onwards to the airport.

“It’s not just their technical proficiency that was impressive, however. The three [tutors] had a real knack of wrangling the group giving everyone guidance appropriate to their skills and encouragement to buoy their confidence.”
